Looking into it just now, I didn't see much usage prior to 2018, but plenty dated from between 2019 and 2024. The Baidu Baike article 斜杠青年 was created in March 2016. Ultimately, the term is probably derived from the book "One Person / Multiple Careers: The Original Guide to the Slash Career" (1st edition published in 2012). Afaics, although 斜槓族 and 斜槓青年 etc. are people, 斜槓 itself is not a kind of person. I'll add an entry for 斜槓青年 as an example of 斜槓 usage. * * * "portfolio career" and "slashie" usage examples: //The Pros and Cons of a Portfolio Career How do you like the idea of having not just one career, but several at once? ... somebody could have a portfolio career by doing a mix of freelance writing, selling crafts and baking cupcakes.// //Slashies are people who do more than one thing to earn a living. The expression comes from the slashes they use when describing their working life, such as “writer / blogger / fitness instructor.”// Cambridge Dictionary: multi-hyphenate (noun) [...] (adjective) having several different jobs, especially in the entertainment industry: - a multi-hyphenate actor-writer-director - Bill is a true multi-hyphenate artist. Ex. 因為自小喜愛閱讀、寫作,自然也積極關注華文文壇動態,林韋地在工作之餘,更積極投入文化事業,自稱為「斜槓青年」的他,除了醫生的正職以外,還擁有新加坡草根書店董事、馬來西亞大將出版社董事等多重身分,並以此活躍於華文文壇中。2016年,因著有感於馬來西亞文學評論的匱乏,他出資創辦《季風帶》文學評論季刊。 Ever since he was a young child, Lim has loved to read and write, so it was only natural that he paid attention to the Chinese-language literary scene. In his time off from work, he actively threw himself into literary work. He describes himself as a “slash” youth, someone who divides his time between different fields. Apart from his job as a doctor, he is also one of the owners of Grassroots Book Room in Singapore, and he remains active in the Chinese-language literary scene there. Feeling that there was a lack of literary criticism on Malaysian Chinese literature, in 2016 he put up the money to found Monsoon Review. 這一趟的引路人,是美濃的文史工作者邱國源。作為美濃第一代「返鄉青年」的他,如今年過七旬,因積極參與故鄉事務,讓他擁有各種斜槓身分,除了曾任旗美商工的教師,也是環境議題的倡議者,更是腳踏實地的文史工作者。 Chiu Kuo-yuan, a cultural historian from Meinong, is leading the way. A member of the first generation of returnees from the big cities, he is now in his seventies and has worn many hats in Meinong over the years. Apart from teaching at Chi Mei Vocational High School, he has also thrown himself into environmental activism and the study of local cultural history. 從外交看見教育的價值 斜槓公關黃鈺雯 From Diplomacy to Education Slashie PR Specialist Huang Yuwen Cancer taught Chang to seize the day and live a meaningful life, but her unexpected adventure also made her realize that she should never put limits on herself. Throughout this journey, she has been welcoming opportunities whenever they arise. In addition to selling her own calendars, Chang has recently held a solo exhibition and established a personal brand. Often invited to give talks, and serving as a hospital volunteer, she also does freelance work, writes columns, and undertakes brand marketing and event planning for businesses. He discovered the pleasures of being a “slashie” in a place known for its slow pace of life. 潘俊仁是斜槓青年,他是書畫、水墨藝術家,也是最專業的戲迷,更是京劇界裡相當罕見的乾旦(男旦)演員,他也是許多學校、法院等場所兼課任教的教師,教授內容橫跨了傳統藝術、美姿美儀,乃至心理輔導。 Delicately featured, upright in his bearing, Pan is leaning into the prime of his life. A painter, calligrapher and serious fan of the theater, he is known in Peking Opera circles as an exceptionally talented nandan (a male performer of dan roles). He also teaches at a number of schools on topics ranging from traditional art to carriage and etiquette, and even serves as a counselor for juvenile offenders.
