<< review queue entry 80440 - submitted by 'beansprout' >> Mainly wanted to add the "to examine; to scrutinize" sense, which I recently encountered in the phrase "端看." This sense seems to be somewhat literary/obscure, as it's not included in 现代汉语词典, 两岸, or 规范. It does appear in 现代汉语大词典 as well as the more historical/comprehensive 辞海 and 汉语大字典. This sense is also retained in a few compounds like 端详 and 端量 (which *are* included in 现代汉语词典, 两岸, and 规范). Other changes: - Updated to v2 - Removed "port" sense since it seems to be an off-shoot of 端's "end; extremity" sense in a select few compounds like 端口. - Added "aspect" gloss to the "item" sense. (Reference: 现代汉语语词典: "方面;项目:举其一~|变化多~。") - Reworded "regular" sense in order to encompass both "(physically) straight" (as in 端坐 and 写字写得端端正正) and "(morally) upstanding" (as in 端方). But maybe this should be split into two separate senses? - Added "bound form" markers according to ABC (via Pleco)'s definition. (Omitted “bound form" marker from the "to examine" sense based on the follow change log entry's editorial comment: https://cc-cedict.org/editor/editor.php?log_id=82391&return=ListChanges&handler=ViewLogEntry). My only uncertainty was that ABC considers the adjectival sense to be a bound form. I agree that it does seem to appear in compounds most of the time, but I did find a few scattered examples in which 端 might (maybe?) be considered free-standing: > "坑子挖了又挖,只怕枣树根伸不开腰腿,受了委屈;肥料称了又称,只怕多了烧坏苗儿,少了营养不良;苗栽得很【端】,水浇得又透。" - 汉典 (https://www.zdic.net/hant/%E7%AB%AF): "(动) (1) 詳審 [look sb. up and down]。" - 辞海 (https://guoxue.baike.so.com/query/view?type=word&title=%E7%AB%AF): "4. 详审。" - 汉语大字典 (https://chardb.iis.sinica.edu.tw/char/18231): "10. 詳審。" --------------------- Editor: I'll add an entry for 端看. 端看 means "to look at sth from a particular angle; to look at an aspect of sth": > 這樣可以環繞作品四面端看,親手撫摸每一道雕痕的親切感,大大縮短了人與藝術的距離, "The fact that you can circle around the sculptures and run your fingers across every line left by the sculptor's knife greatly reduces the distance between visitor and art." ... but is more typically used as an equivalent of "to depend on (some aspect or other)": - 一切端看販售員的自由選擇。 - 唱歌其實就是一種說話的態度,一個人用什麼態度,端看他的個性。 - 凡事一體兩面,端看你如何看待, - 各種野餐籃有各自的好處,帆布輕巧、鋁箔保冷,端看使用者的需求而定。 - 端看演員功力決定演出的優劣 - 端看父母親的堅持度 * * * HDC distinguishes 32 senses for 端, but we, like most other dictionaries, are aiming for something more concise. Many dictionaries leave out the "scrutinize" sense, and I think that's because, to use your words, it can be considered "an off-shoot of [another] sense in a select few compounds". The sense I'm referring to is "aspect; facet; point; item". Scrutinize = "look closely at every aspect". One dictionary (Kroll's dictionary of classical and medieval Chinese) expresses this sense as an adverb: "carefully, in detail, considering all angles or eventualities". * * * I'll add LA's sense #9 as "to eliminate; to wipe out". (陸) 澈底除掉。 例 「端了賭場」、「一舉端掉了這個製毒窩點」。 https://www.moedict.tw/~%E7%AB%AF |
