1) "learned from one's predecessors" could mean that they passed on their knowledge to the current generation by writing down what they learned or directly via instruction. In fact, it's a lesson learned by *observing* others' failures.

2) It's not necessarily one's precedessors -- it can be a lesson learned by observing *anyone else's* failures -- not necessarily those of one's predecessors. (In none of the examples below were the lessons learned from "one's predecessors".)

3) I think the "lit." part of the idiom is useful in this case because it's a bit cryptic how 前車 means "predecessors" or "others".

4) Variant form:
Trad 前車之鑑 has significantly more GV hits (242k vs 157k), and far more TP hits (23 vs 2).

When a real-estate bubble forms, those wishing to buy homes as their own residences start grumbling about affordability, and when it bursts, it can hit the financial system and the whole economy hard. Japan's "lost decade" and the current US financial crisis are two excellent cases in point.

Throughout the 1980s, what American and European scholars saw as the East Asian economic model, resting on the laurels of "Confucian values," was self-confidently developed. Ebullient leaders of the Little Tigers, looking at the economic problems of Europe and America, frequently mocked the "laziness" of Westerners and talked about learning from the mistakes of the welfare state. Triumphant captains of industry openly scorned the slothfulness of Americans.

Take Taiwan's music industry, for example. It has spent the last decade doing everything in its power to stop piracy and illegal downloading of its products. This has included shutting down websites offering legal downloads, encrypting digital music, and even bringing out the big guns to sue online music platforms that haven't secured the rights to songs. What valuable lessons can the publishing industry learn from the music industry's failed efforts?
