I did find that 瑯 occurs a lot more often than 琅 in TP articles, but on closer inspection, that was largely due to a single commonly-used idiom, more often written as 琳瑯滿目 than as 琳琅滿目. Another case that contributed to some extent was 琺瑯, which was never written as 琺琅.

On the other hand, 琅琅 (as in 琅琅上口 and 孩子們琅琅的讀書聲 etc) was never written as 瑯瑯.

So, it's complicated! But "variant of 琅[lang2]" is acceptable unless we want to write complicated definitions of 瑯 and 琅.
