It's usually used adjectivally, as in 虛假訊息 or 虛假符號 or 都太虛假了。

When it's a noun, it's the nominalized form of the adjective (i.e. pretense in the sense "falseness; phoniness"), so it's unnecessary to include it. Also, it's ambiguous to define the noun sense as "pretense" -- that word has a several senses, including countable noun senses, that are not what 虛假 means.
