<< review queue entry 80019 - submitted by 'tulekbehar' >> Problem with Headword: 畐 ㄈㄨˊ Please explain the issue in more detail: pleco says DEFINITION to fill; a foll of cloth ------------------------ Editor: 畐 is a character that nowadays neither represents a standalone word, nor is it a character that combines with other characters to form a compound word. In present-day usage, afaics, it can be considered extinct, except as a character sub-component, i.e. a component used to build characters such as 富副辐幅福, etc. As a character sub-component it serves as a sound component, indicating that the character of which it is a component is pronounced "fu" (fù or fú etc.) The definition of 畐 given in Pleco ("to fill; a foll of cloth") comes from what Pleco refers to as "UNI", which is the kDefinition field of the Unicode Han Database: https://www.unicode.org/Public/5.0.0/ucd/Unihan.html?form=MG0AV3#kDefinition It's not a particularly reliable source — "a foll of cloth" is probably intended to be "a roll of cloth". But I don't see that meaning mentioned in other sources. Nor do I see "to fill" mentioned in other sources. HDC's entry for 畐, for example, suggests that it's an archaic character that refers to a type of cooking vessel: 容器名。无足鬲。 Wenlin (PC version) offers the following notes on 畐: “House and field” —Karlgren(1923). “As with the character for wine [酉], it represents a long-necked vessel seen from the side” —Lindqvist. Probably cognate with 富 fù ‘wealth’ and 福 fú ‘happiness’. Wenlin's online version offers the following additional notes: [Some of the characters I cop/pasted will probably not display here correctly.] The Shuōwén Seal form of 畐(畗) fú ‘full/blessed’ is said to combine 高() gāo ‘high (ancestral hall)’ (abbrev.), with a shape like 田() tián ‘field/land’ down below representing abundant land/harvest; abundant harvest blessings/riches piled sky high (高厚). Compare: 富() fù ‘rich/wealth’, 福() fú ‘blessing/happiness’, 愊() bì ‘complete sincerity’; 良(𣌩) liáng ‘good’ (in which 畐 is an abbrev. component). Note: The modern form is 畐 (with 𠮛⿱一口), formerly also wr. 畗 (with ⿱亠口); in SW Seal compounds the component 畗() is wr. 畐 (as in the modern forms), e.g. 福(), 葍(), 副(), …; SW has no entry for 逼/偪 bī ‘force/compel’, formerly wr. 畐 (DYC). Older graphs associated with 畐(畗) are thought to depict an amphora-like legless ceramic liquor vessel/bottle, with long thin neck, large bulging belly, and lid/stopper; cf. 缶(), 𠠦(副); 覆(𧠃). |
