<< review queue entry 79965 - submitted by 'moon' >> Definition: 谓情意十分真切。 https://www.zdic.net/hans/%E6%83%85%E7%9C%9F%E6%84%8F%E5%88%87 Example sentences: - 她的一番话情真意切 - 您的情人发出了情真意切的恳求! - 安妮情真意切地希望他不要太挑剔,太认真了。 ------------------- Editor: "true love and genuine concern" is the noun phrase offered by the ABC dictionary as a definition for 情真意切, but in all your examples, it's a *verb* phrase. Although it can function as a noun, e.g. in 充满了情真意切, that seems to be a less common form of usage, and in any case its noun meaning is predictable from a verb phrase definition such as "to be sincere; to be heartfelt". "true love and genuine concern" is also the exact wording in New Century (NC). Most likely, both NC and ABC copied it from an earlier Chinese-English dictionary. New Age (NA), by contrast, evidently thought out their wording from scratch, rendering it as a verb phrase: "to be sincere and earnest; be full of true sentiment and genuine concern". * * * In their 2009 paper "‘Syntactic Yoga’ in Chinese-English Lexicography", David Prager Branner and Yuan-Yuan Meng criticize ABC for defining chéngyǔ 成语 "in ways that conceal [their] normal usage in Chinese". They give the following 14 examples of chéngyǔ that "have important verbal usages (below, VP: ‘verb phrase'), but which are rendered [in ABC] as though they were exclusively noun phrases (N) or complete subject-predicate sentences." In the examples below, Branner and Meng first give their definition, "based on intensive study of recent sources", and then quote the ABC definition. I'm quoting the whole list partly for my own reference – we may want to review our definitions of some of these, e.g. 风调雨顺. 假仁假义. N: pretended kindness; VP: to pretend to be kind and just ABC: hypocrisy 冷言冷语. N: sarcastic or icy remarks; VP: to make sarcastic or icy remarks (with 对) ABC: sarcastic/ironical remarks 大逆不道. VP: to be morally unacceptable (of actions or things said) ABC: treason and heresy; worst offense; sedition 赤胆忠心. N: intense loyalty; VP: to be intensely loyal (toward leaders, countries, political parties, etc.) ABC: utter devotion; loyalty 风调雨顺. VP: to have good weather for crops ABC: good weather for crops 风云变幻. N: constant changes; VP: to undergo constant change (of markets, political and social situations) ABC: ①changeable situation ②constant change of events 鬼话连篇. VP: to be full of malarky: to be a pack of lies (of opinions) ABC: a pack of lies 待人接物. VP: to interact with people ABC: ①the way one treats people ②one's personality 绵里藏针. VP: to have something powerful or unpleasant concealed behind a deceptively gentle exterior ABC: iron hand in a velvet glove 花言巧语. N: cajoling and slightly dishonest things that are said; VP: to say cajoling things in order to fool someone (with 对) ABC: blandishments 人微言轻. VP: to have no clout ABC: words of the lowly carry no weight 欲壑难填. VP: to be insatiably greedy ABC: avarice knows no bounds 死有余辜. VP: to be so evil that death is too good for one ABC: even death would not expiate all his crimes |
