If we're doing a relatively "free" literal translation (as opposed to sth like "square tenon, round mortise"), I think we should at least make it match the part-of-speech of the figurative meaning.

There is nothing like 放 ("put") in the expression 方枘圆凿, nor is 方枘圆凿 is used like a dynamic verb ("put ..."), afaik.

ex. 双方的意见,圆凿方枘,相持不相让,又怎能谈好?
