Editor: I would suggest also that it's typically not just some anonymous bandit, but rather a *notorious* one, hence the character 大. That's what is indicated in various dictionaries. GR, for example, has "pirate infâme" (infamous pirate) and "surnom du chef d'une bande de voleurs célèbres" (nickname of the leader of a famous band of thieves). PLC says "notorious robber". NA has "notorious robber/pirate".

The sentence 就算我去偷东西,我也要偷成江洋大盗。 suggests, I think, that 江洋大盗 is not just an ordinary thief, but a "master thief".

In the phrase 有名有姓打乾陵主意的江洋大盗, they are explicitly famous (有名有姓) -- notable figures.

大盜:

在著名的好萊塢探險電影《印第安那瓊斯》系列裡,白人主角不斷出入原始民族的聖地,同時扮演著劫掠寶物的大盜和拯救原民的英雄角色,這樣的情節看在卑南族的林阿民眼裡,別有一番滋味。
