唐宋之前的文献里,麒麟没有鳞片,多是似鹿、独角、有毛动物的描述 //one-horned

元明以后乃至现代,麒麟创作的艺术形象逐渐固定在龙首、马身(或鹿身)、有鳞,大多为双角,但也有独角形象的创作,如明代《三才图会》中的麒麟画像 //two-horned

明永乐十二年(1414年),郑和的船队航行到东非,曾带两只东非进贡的长颈鹿回燕京称是麒麟。[23]明成祖以此祥瑞之兆,来表示自己施政的功绩。

当时碰巧索马里语中长颈鹿叫giri,“麒麟”即作为giri的音译。时至今日,日本及韩国仍将长颈鹿称作麒麟,闽南语使用者也将“长颈鹿”称作“麒麟鹿”(另有呼“长颔鹿”、“长头鹿仔”)。

- 騏驎/骐麟 is incorrect since 驎 simplifies to 𬴊, not 麟. But both 骐麟 and 骐𬴊 seem to be variants of 麒麟, with 骐𬴊 in addition referring to a horse that can travel a certain distance in a day (which I think can just be translated as a "fine horse")

Of course nowadays we call a giraffe a 长颈鹿. But I think mentioning giraffe is useful for historical context, and also in case someone is reading or referring to an old text. And for whatever it's worth, 麒麟 is preserved in Japanese as giraffe... though I can't imagine anyone would write 麒麟, they would just write きりん. Anyways, I think marking it with the "(old)" label is good.
