My physical dictionaries and some online dictionaries say the monkey sense is also yu2, though zdic says yu4.

"legendary monkey" - I assume the "legendary" part comes from 西游记, though it could predate that. In the beginning of 西游记, 孙悟空 becomes sworn brothers with 6 other demon kings on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, one of them is 禺狨王 which is described as a legendary monkey.

But in old dictionaries it's just defined as a type of (non-legendary) monkey
说文解字: 母猴
正字通: 禺似獼猴而大,赤目長尾,山中多有之 (this implies it's a real species)

Diff:
- 禺 禺 [[yu2]] /(archaic) district/
+ 禺 禺 [[yu2]] /(archaic) district/(old) type of monkey/

- 禺 禺 [yu4] /legendary monkey of ancient China/
