<< review queue entry 76405 - submitted by 'kbaiko' >> Follow up to https://cc-cedict.org/editor/editor.php?log_id=82814&popup=1&handler=ViewLogEntry Dictionaries just say "used in 莴苣" but that's not quite right, besides the existing entries on CC-CEDICT there are at least four more plants - 皱叶绢毛苣, 苣叶报春, 苣叶鼠尾草, 苣叶秃疮花, then also in names of various genera like oreocharis (马铃苣苔属), cyphocarpus (苣莲属), taraxia (苣晖草属), etc. Disclaimer, I'm not a botanist ------------------------------- Editor: I think "used in 莴苣" is fine: - in definitions, the "used in ..." list need not be exhaustive (it should include the *most notable* word(s)) - 苣 most frequently occurs in 莴苣 - in 菊苣 and 苦苣, for example, 苣 can perhaps be regarded as an abbr. for 莴苣 and carry the meaning of "lettuce-like plant" - similarly, in 苣叶报春, for example, I suspect 苣叶 can be regarded as meaning "lettuce-like leaf", like in this photo ~ https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/primula-sonchifolia-photographs--770115605045868920/ (it's a photo of 苣叶报春(学名:Primula sonchifolia)) - I think "various plants" is unhelpful because it's so general and vague. I get the impression that 苣[ju4] occurs in words that refer to *herbaceous* plants that are either lettuce or similar to lettuce in some way. Probably not in words that mean pine tree, cycad or wisteria. (But I'm certainly not a botanist either.) |
