This was used a lot in 水浒传, apparently because 朴刀 was the only weapon that citizens were allowed to use in the Song dynasty. But it's still commonly seen today in martial arts shows.

Editor: A "short hilt"?
Then how could it be wielded with both hands?

I think they mean the *tang* of the blade is short, not the hilt/handle.

Wikipedia says its blade is about half the length of the weapon.
朴刀全长约一米二至一米五,其刀刃比大刀长,大约占总长度的一半,

That means the handle/hilt was also about half the length of the weapon, which is not what I'd call short.

The "narrow" bit is also in various sources but is contradicted by Wikipedia, for example:
