"to roll used in dyeing trough"???

I don't think "dyeing trough" is even a real thing, Google shows 700 results for that term. I guess they mean "vat dyeing", but that doesn't seem right either because 轧 here means "crushing" or "rolling", while the vat dye process involves submerging fabric in dye and air-drying. I imagine it's the machine shown here

>轧染是怎么一回事儿
>轧染是将织物在染液中经过短暂的(一般为几秒或几十秒钟)浸渍后,立即用轧辊轧压,将染液挤压进入织物的组织和空隙内,同时轧去多余的染液,使染料均匀地分布在织物上

Editor: I don't know much about dyeing, but looking at what's on the Web, I would say the definition you propose is approximately correct but would be more precisely and succinctly termed "pad dyeing". Also, I find that the term "trough" is correct in the context of pad dyeing.

zdic definition:

This indicates that the fabric is immersed only briefly, whereas in vat dyeing the time of immersion is typically anything from 20 minutes to several hours. The brevity of the immersion is, I believe, what makes it appropriate to call the reservoir used in this process a trough rather than a vat.

"trough" is used here:
"In piece dyeing, which is used primarily for fabrics that are to be a solid color, a continuous length of dry cloth is passed full-width through a trough of hot dye solution. The cloth then goes between padded rollers that squeeze in the color evenly and removes the excess liquid."
https://www.cotton.org/pubs/cottoncounts/fieldtofabric/dyeing.cfm

The following Wikipedia article refers to "dye baths", which appear to be the same thing as "dye troughs". These are distinguished from "vats" in that fabric is continuously moved through baths or troughs, whereas in a vat the fabric is allowed to sit stationary.

"Fabrics are typically dyed after being manufactured through a process known as piece-dyeing, the technique involves immersion of the fabric in a dye bath. However, pad-dyeing was invented to accelerate the dyeing process without necessarily lowering costs.[8] This process involves feeding the fabric to be dyed through a machine equipped with dye baths and rubber rollers. The fabric passes over rollers, immerses into a dye bath, and then proceeds through rollers that remove excess dye, allowing it to return to the dye container.[8] The difference between piece-dyeing in a vat and using a pad-dyeing machine is that in the latter, the fabric is continuously moved through one or more dye baths, rather than being stationary in a vat until it is fully saturated.[8]"

The following article states that pad dyeing is also known as continuous dyeing.

"Pad dyeing is nowadays known as continuous dyeing. The fabric is passed through large pad rollers which squeeze the dye onto the fabric. The material passed through the liquor and squeeze rollers would be expected to absorb 50% to 100% of their weight in the dye liquor. The lower the percentage pick-up, the higher must be the concentration of dye liquor."

The following article on continuous dyeing has a diagram in which the dye is shown in reservoirs that are labeled as "troughs".

"An initial padding stage is common to all sequences. It involves immersion of the fabric in the dye liquor contained in a trough of minimal volume, which is kept constantly replenished from a stock tank."

One of the zdic definitions of 軋染 is "pad dyeing".

Also, their definition of 軋染機 is "padder":

I asked ChatGPT to explain to me what a padder is. Note that the dye reservoir is referred to in its answer as a "trough".

Me: In dyeing, what is a "padder"?

ChatGPT:
In dyeing, a "padder" refers to a machine or device used to apply liquids, such as dye solutions, chemicals, or finishes, onto fabric or other substrates uniformly. A typical padder consists of several key components: (1) Rollers: ... (2) Dye or chemical reservoir: Padders have a reservoir or trough where the liquid dye solution or chemical is held. (3) ...
