A marriage license, which is issued *before* you marry, gives you permission to marry, whereas a marriage certificate is proof that you *have* married. And I believe 领证 relates to the certificate, not the license. 2) I don't agree that "to marry" is superfluous, just as the authors of the following definition did not see it as superfluous to add 借指结婚 at the end of the 2nd sense. 1. 领取证件、证书。 | 他是今年的毕业生～代表。 2. 〖陆〗领取结婚证。借指结婚。 | 他俩交往多年，预计下个月～。 |
