For one thing, it's an unusual adjective in that it comes *after* the noun, as in "someone else", whereas 其它, like most English adjectives, can come *before* the noun. Secondly, afaics, it matches "some ... else" rather than just "else". For example, 其它地方 means "some place else" or "somewhere else" — not "place else" or "else place". Let me know if I'm missing something here. 2) As for "only referring to things", which non-things are you proposing to exclude? *Everything* is technically a "thing", but I'm sure you are proposing to exclude only certain types of things. All living things, perhaps? Does that include plants and animals, or just people?
