Rather, it means that the coinage dates from *no later than* that year. It also means that we found usage in that year. "c." means "circa" (approximately). We are trying to give an *approximate* date for when the word started to be used. And the date is meant to be taken as an *upper bound*, not necessarily the actual year the word was coined. 2) if you label a word a "neologism", one assumes it was coined in the last few years. But if it was coined in, say 2008, then 20 years from now (in 2043), it's no longer a newly coined word. But it will still true to say that it was *in 2008* a neologism, which is what "neologism c. 2008" means. In other words, the simple label "neologism" ages poorly, whereas "neologism c. ...." remains true forever. |
