I am not sure why "rapid" is listed as a translation - I do not know of any such definition. But if I am wrong please add it back.

Nowadays 挞 is usually seen in the context of tart, like 蛋挞 or 果挞, as 挞 has the "ta" sound of "tart". I think this definition is more common than the other and is worth including here.
---------------------------------

Editor: "rapid" is in several of the larger dictionaries.

Grand Ricci ~ "2. rapide; impétueux"
HDC ~ "4. 迅速"
A Student's Dict of Classical and Medieval Chinese ~ "2. swift; speedy; rapid"
Diff:
- 撻 挞 [ta4] /flog/rapid/
# +撻 挞 [ta4] /to whip; to flog; to chastise/tart (also pronounced [ta3])/
+ 撻 挞 [ta4] /(bound form) to whip; to flog/(loanword) tart/
