<< review queue entry 74023 - submitted by 'becky82' >> We talked about this at the Chinese Stack Exchange https://chinese.stackexchange.com/q/54720/8099 It seems 气候 doesn't really mean "atmosphere". The closest example was 政治气候 = "political climate" which arguably might also be translated to "political atmosphere". It really is a stretch to say 气候 means "atmosphere", though. ----------------------------------------------- Editor: "atmosphere" has five senses in Merriam-Webster, for example, and the one that best matches 氣候 is #3: "a surrounding influence or environment" (which would be quite apt as a definition for the figurative sense of 氣候). As a matter of fact, Grand Ricci (French-Chinese dictionary) includes in its definition of 氣候 the following sense: "(fig.) ambiance; atmosphère". The problem with our definition is that it doesn't make clear which sense of "atmosphere" is intended. (It's certainly not "the gaseous envelope of a celestial body (such as a planet)".) In addition, a "situation" can be change rapidly, whereas 氣候 refers to conditions that are relatively well-established. |
