This is the CC-CEDICT Editor website, not the MDBG Chinese Dictionary website. It's up to the *app developers* who use CC-CEDICT (such as MDBG, Pleco, Zhongwen for Chrome etc) to display the most relevant entries first, in response to a user's search request. We, at this website, are the *editors* of the dictionary, not app developers. * * * 妳 is just one of *many* headwords that appear in multiple entries. Another one is 中, which is a headword in three entries. In the general case, it is not a trivial matter for a script to determine the best order in which to display the entries. A simple solution is to display them in alphabetical order (according to pinyin). This appears to be what MDBG, for example, has been doing. A more sophisticated approach that takes into account the likely relevance of each entry would require quite a lot of work, going through each case one by one, and if you are using a free app like MDBG, it may be unreasonable to expect that someone will be prepared to do that. And there is not that much to be gained really. After all, it doesn't take long for a user to skim over two or three entries in the search results to find the one that's relevant to them. Having said that, 1) I have rewritten the entry for 妳[ni3] in such a way that it is no longer defined as "variant of 你". 2) I have suggested to MDBG that they treat words defined as "variant of ..." as less relevant than words that have regular definitions, and they have said they will implement that. Putting #1 and #2 together, the result is that MDBG will very soon display the 妳 entries in the order you would approve of. |
