1) "water conservation" is usually something *people* do, whereas 涵養 seems to be something a forest (for example) does.

The irrigation ponds also provided a home for abundant water plants, including Nuphar shimadae.

2) "self-restraint" and "self-possession" don't match usage very well.

China has a long history of cultivating leaders. In ancient times efforts focused on preparing the crown prince to ascend to the throne. His education at court focused on cultivating kindness, morality and broad-mindedness through an appreciation of art and culture.

Right. So these days, ''newly rich intellectuals" are in fashion. This kind of person is often very well-educated and has a deep cultural background. They got rich through their own hard work, knowledge and industry. They're often smart and deep. They're the heart of social development.

When I look at people who have been through the Taiwanese educational system, I see that we all share a common shortcoming: we lack the ability to lead, the magnanimity to submit to the leadership of others, and the strength of character required for cooperation and compromise. To put it in terms of that new buzzword, EQ (emotional quotient), it seems to me that education in Taiwan has deprived us of the chance to mature emotionally at a key stage of our development.

Ironically, the frustration of his professional ambitions was what enabled Su to preserve his freewheeling creative artistry.

conditioned by his own cultural learning

Strength of character is very important in a dancer.
