遺忘 is often combined with 被, and 被遺忘 of course means "become forgotten" or "be forgotten".
But 遺忘 itself does not have that passive meaning.

Ex.
Japan's most ancient surviving performing art is kagura, a type of medieval sacred Shinto dance which is also the source from which Noh and Kabuki developed. Kagura has been somewhat forgotten in Japan.

These days the "September 18 incident," which symbolized the spirit of resistance to Japan, is now virtually forgotten.

had destroyed evidence-all so that people will forget.

The Chinese place great importance on eventually returning to their roots, and always hope to be buried close to home. But many political prisoners never returned to Taiwan proper and were buried in Green Island graves. Their broken tombstones give testimony to half a century of tragic suffering. How can we forget them?

When cinema is reduced to an entertainment commodity geared purely to box office receipts, then, like television, pop music and other forms of mass culture, its consumer life-cycle becomes extremely brief. People get used to rapidly liking and consuming the product, and then forgetting all about it.
Diff:
- 遺忘 遗忘 [yi2 wang4] /to become forgotten/to forget/
+ 遺忘 遗忘 [yi2 wang4] /to forget; to cease to think about (sb or sth) anymore/
