But that doesn't mean the single character 茴, which is rarely used on its own, has all those meanings. As far as I can tell, "fennel" is the basic meaning (LA, for example, defines 茴 as 參見【茴香】) and the other senses come from adding extra characters, as in 大茴香 star anise (literally, big fennel). |
