刺痛也用作动词。

------------------------------------

Editor: Yes, it should include a verb sense. But it's interesting that you remove "stab of pain" and quote Wiktionary's current definition, because one of Wiktionary's most brilliant and prolific editors (Wyang) created the original version of their entry for 刺痛 in 2016* and included "stab of pain", only to have it removed by a relatively mediocre editor a few years later (in January 2022).

So instead of "stab of pain", Wiktionary now has mere "prickling" and "tingling", which makes it rather odd that the psychological sense of the word is said to be "to hurt deeply". How can 刺痛 have such a strong figurative sense when the physical sense is so mild as "tingling"?

The answer is, of course, that Wyang had got it right in the first place. As he indicated in his original definition, the pain ranges from mild to severe: "prickle; tingle; stab of pain".

Examples of 刺痛 pain at the more severe end of the scale:
- 强烈的刺痛让欧辰失去了平日的冷静,他紧紧箍住她的肩膀低喊着,那种要将他撕裂的痛从他的胃从他的心汹涌而来。
- 更慘的是,有時連呼吸都成為一件痛苦的事,因為一吸氣,刺痛感從胸腔直傳腦門,那一刻真希望腦袋和身體是分開的,
Diff:
- 刺痛 刺痛 [ci4 tong4] /stab of pain/sting/fig. stimulus to action/a prick/
# + 刺痛 刺痛 [ci4 tong4] /(medicine) to have a prickling pain/prickling pain/(fig.) to hurt deeply/
+ 刺痛 刺痛 [ci4 tong4] /to tingle; to sting; to have a sudden sharp pain; (fig.) to hurt deeply/tingle; prick; sting; stab of pain/
