<< review queue entry 72931 - submitted by 'bezier_benzoate' >> more direct literal translation --------------------------------- Editor: In the "lit." part of an idiom definition, we often aim for a *relatively* literal translation rather than one that is so literal it can be obtained by simply looking at the characters (in this case, we have 得利 – "obtain benefit"). In the story on which this idiom is based, the fisherman gets both the clam and the snipe, and that's an element that I'd like to retain in the definition, rather than adhere strictly to the characters, because it's a bit cryptic to say "the old fisherman benefits". I would want to know *how* he benefits – tell me the punchline! |
