However, you should have deleted "intention", not "motivation". Yes, I know "intention" is in C-E dictionaries, but it's wrong. 動機 doesn't really mean "intention", even though it "works" as a word that one can use in translating a sentence containing 動機. Here's an example of how it "works": 他做這件事的動機，令人百思不解。 This can be translated as either "People are baffled as to what his motivations were in doing this." or "People are baffled as to what his intentions were in doing this." Both translations convey the idea adequately. So what's the problem with regarding 動機 as "intention"? Well, a 動機 is a REASON for doing something, whereas an intention is an OBJECTIVE. An example: (I feel thirsty) --> (I pour a glass of water and drink it) "Feeling thirsty" is a motivation; it is not an intention. Another example: 問及學普通話的動機，七成以上的學生認為「有助於交談」、「將來對工作有幫助」，有五成以上認為「說普通話是一種中國人的身份象徵」。 When children were asked their motives for studying Mandarin, over 70% replied that it would "help them to converse with others" and would be "useful for future employment," while more than 50% said that "speaking Mandarin is symbolic of our status as Chinese." Consider the first of these three 動機: The belief that Mandarin will help one converse with others is NOT an intention; it's a motivation (a reason for learning the language). A similar comment applies to the other two 動機. They are motivations, not intentions. |
