"tread" has several senses.
One of them is
"the pattern of raised lines on a tyre that prevents a vehicle from sliding on the road : 'The tread on your tyres is very worn.' "
That's the sense that Miles seems to have intended with "tread (on tire)".

But it's not what 輪距 means.
As the characters suggest, 輪距 is a *distance*.
M ~ 車輪間的距離;特指汽車兩前輪或輪式拖拉機兩後輪輪胎中心的距離。

So M is indicating a completely different sense of "tread", defined in M-W as
"the distance between the points of contact with the ground of the two front wheels or the two rear wheels of a vehicle"

It looks like Miles copied from Z:
英语 tread (on tire), gauge
法语 bande de roulement, jauge

Don't trust Z!
Diff:
- 輪距 轮距 [lun2 ju4] /tread (on tire)/gauge/
+ 輪距 轮距 [lun2 ju4] /tread (the distance between the two front – or two rear – wheels of a vehicle)/
