But 交际花 has a range of meanings that only partially overlaps with "(female) social butterfly". E.g. 出人舞场饭店，打扮得像个交际花，喝酒抽烟，说话也变得粗俗下流，言谈不离饮食男女， "hanging out in dance halls and restaurants, making herself up like a whore, drinking and smoking and lots of filthy language, interested only in eat drink man woman" In another novel, someone is described as a 交際花, but the connotations are not so derogatory in this case: 他這話還沒說完，猛的一陣香風，送進了一位袒肩露臂的年青女子。她的一身玄色輕紗的一九三○年式巴黎夏季新裝，更顯出她皮膚的瑩白和嘴唇的鮮紅。沒有開口說話，就是滿臉的笑意；她遠遠地站著，只把她那柔媚的眼光瞟著這邊的人堆。 第一個發見她的是周仲偉。嘴裏「啊喲」了一聲，這矮胖子就跳起來，舉起一雙臂膊在空中亂舞，嘻開了大嘴巴，喊道： 「全體起立歡迎交際花徐曼麗女士！」 Wikipedia's article https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/交際花 is paired with the English article "Courtesan".
