"culture level" refers to the level of sophistication of a culture, whereas "cultural layer" refers to a stratum in soil.. E.g. 1) CULTURE LEVEL "Archaeologists argue that the replacement of Neanderthals by modern humans was driven by interspecific competition due to a difference in culture level." 2) CULTURAL LAYER "Archaeological excavations conducted from 1958 to 1966 revealed three cultural layers here."
