<< review queue entry 69734 - submitted by 'gabor111' >> longer variant of below existing entry: 瞪眼 瞪眼 [deng4 yan3] /to open one's eyes wide/to stare/to glare (at sb)/to scowl/ LINE Dict lists over 1000 usage examples: https://dict.naver.com/linedict/zhendict/dict.html#/cnen/example?query=%E7%9E%AA%E7%9D%80%E7%9C%BC%E7%9D%9B ------------------------------- Editor: 1) LINE does not "list over 1000 usage examples" for 瞪着眼睛. They do list 1422 examples, but only a fraction of them contain "瞪着眼睛". Here are some of their examples: - 她以愤怒的眼光瞪着他。 She fixed him with an angry stare. - 他伤着眼睛了吗? Did he hurt his eyes? - 他斜着眼睛问。 he asked, with a kit of leer. - 我闭着眼睛都能做 I could do it blindfold 2) There are so many variants that use the same basic elements: 瞪着眼睛 瞪着眼 瞪眼 瞪眼睛 瞪 瞪着 她眼睛瞪着我 and so on. They all indicate that someone stares or glares (or is staring/glaring). We don't try to cover all these expressions. Instead, we define the basic elements, like 瞪 and 着 and 眼睛, and maybe one or two of the permutations (we have 瞪眼). The meaning of all seven expressions listed above is reasonably clear from the definitions of their constituent words. |
