<< review queue entry 69605 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> 1) I think "judgment" is misleading. 報應 is not "an opinion or decision that is based on careful thought". 2) It's not quite the same as English "retribution". A person may take a specific action against someone else as an act of retribution, whereas 報應 is normally not something caused by a person; rather, it is the *universe* that is punishing someone who has done wrong. For example, someone gets sick because of bad things they have done in the past, as in the first example sentence below. During her two-hour operation, Li-ping was worried and apprehensive, praying and even wondering if this was retribution for her evil ways. [She was having an operation after being hit in the face by a discus at a school athletics meet. It's not like the discus thrower intended to hit her in order to exact retribution.] Many sufferers and their families are haunted by the notion that such diseases are "retribution" or "the curse of heaven." The moral tales of Chinese Buddhism, in which good is rewarded and evil punished, have appeared in play form. 以及「善惡報應」、「轉世」、「輪迴」等傳統民間信仰 and on the importance of folk religious beliefs and traditions such as karma, reincarnation and the transmigration of the soul. You've done a lot of bad things, so it'll come back to you eventually. Exactly! 'People do, and the heavens watch'. Aren't they afraid of bad karma? Mr. Wei, long time no see. I never thought this day would come. All the atrocious things you've done in the entertainment industry, and now God has finally lined up your retribution. |
