<< review queue entry 68447 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> "cautious and conscientious" is the definition that has been copied and recopied in many dictionaries, but based on usage, it seems "cautious" strikes the wrong note -- "cautious and conscientious" is a too-literal translation of 兢兢 + 业业. In practice, the 兢兢 element is more like "careful, painstaking and meticulous" rather than "cautious and fearful of making a mistake". PLC's definition is "cautious and conscientious" but in their example sentence, they quietly drop the "cautious" bit and simply translate it as "conscientious".
