<< review queue entry 67761 - submitted by 'samsara' >> 吸食,汉语词语,读音xī shí,意思是把气体或液体吸进嘴里(如食物、毒品等) -------------------------------- Editor: 1) This suggestion should be submitted as two lines ~ - 吸食 吸食 [xi1 shi2] /to suck/to take in/ + 吸食 吸食 [xi1 shi2] /to suck/to take in/to consume (illegal drugs)/ (You can do this by following the procedure I outlined in my email to you.) 2) "to suck; to take in" is a legacy definition copied and recopied from an old dictionary: "A Chinese-English Dictionary" (1978). It's not particularly good -- too broad a definition. Jet engines and vacuum cleaners "suck" and "take things in", but they don't 吸食. So I'm going to try to rewrite the definition from scratch. 3) In many instances, it's a creature (typically an insect) that does this (吸食). 4) I don't think it's necessarily *illegal* drugs. I found 吸食 usage where it was methadone, for example, and I imagine it could also apply when it's abuse of legal painkillers, or drug use in a traditional tribal setting. |
