聲母 doesn't mean "consonant".
The "th" in "thank" is a consonant, but it's not a 声母 since it isn't a consonant that appears at the start of a Chinese syllable.
The "n" in hàn is a consonant, but it's not a 声母 since it comes at the end of the syllable.
