一般中國人對來世其實缺乏「信心」,拜拜、求神問佛儘管熱烈,並不真的相信親人死後前往天堂樂土。
In fact, most Chinese lack any "faith" in an afterlife, and despite the popularity of worship, prayer and divination in Daoist and Buddhist temples, they do not really believe that after death their relatives go to a heaven or paradise.

商周時期,諸侯、侍從、僕役、士兵、女人跟馬常常成為殉葬的犧牲者,以在來世生活中,服侍駕崩的統治者、公主嬪妃、或是侯爵,有時候樂師也在陪葬之列。
During the Shang and Zhou periods, in order to serve in the afterlife, aristocrats, attendants, servants, soldiers, women, musicians, and, yes, horses, were sacrificed and buried with the deceased members of the royal family.

對於自詡現代的人們來說,如此的意志與期待是非常不可思議的,然而對藏人而言,前世今生象徵生命的循環不息,生命的結束是為迎接來世而準備,面對死亡即是面對生命的開始,一切有如圍繞著「岡仁布欽」的神祇般永世生生不息。
For those who pride themselves on being modern, beliefs and expectations of this sort are inconceivable. Yet for the Tibetans one's past lives and current life are representative of the eternal cycle of life. One life ends in preparation for the life to come. Confronting death is the same thing as confronting the start of a life. Everything is part of an eternal cycle, like the ceremony of circling Mt. Kailash.
