It doesn't mean "hardy" etc. -- I don't think anyone else claims that. See GF, for example.

耐用 means "withstand (耐) being used (用)", and therefore "durable".
So it's 耐用 that means "durable", not 耐.
Diff:
- 耐 耐 [nai4] /capable of enduring/able to tolerate/patient/durable/hardy/resistant/
+ 耐 耐 [nai4] /(bound form) to bear/to endure/to withstand/
