(TP: "Always self-effacing, ...") Basically, I think GF's definition can understood as "1. conspicuous 2. to make conspicuous". So I think that, literally, 不彰顯自己 is "does not make himself conspicuous" or "doesn't draw attention to himself" -- in other words, he is "self-effacing". It doesn't mean "he doesn't manifest himself" or "he doesn't demonstrate himself".
