"lit. dress up as God, play the devil" makes it sound like it's a Christian saying.

Actually, Chinese dicts say it means 假扮鬼神.
In other words 神 is not God and 鬼 is not the devil.
Rather, it's about pretending to be (or be in contact with) 鬼神 (ghosts; spirits).
Nothing to do with Christianity.

Many centuries later, during the Qing dynasty, there was a lazy man called Jiang Sanmang, who heard the story of Song Dingbo and conceived a crafty little plan. Every day he went to the graveyard carrying a stick and a rope, and waited to snare himself a gui, which he intended to sell to fund his drinking. He tried for a whole month before giving up, empty-handed. Even today, however, there are still those who make their living out of "pretending to rouse the gui."

The Academia Sinica's Li Feng-mao, who has lectured on death and ghosts at many teaching hospitals, feels that we should not only keep a distance from ghosts, but should also set up a series of research institutes to tackle the issue from a scientific standpoint. We are seeing the emergence of an eerie new trend in Taiwanese cinema--the rise of the horror genre. It began with Chen Kuo-fu's Double Vision, a 2002 film that raked in more than NT$80 million at the domestic box office. Next came 2005's The Heirloom, a low-budget project that has hit it big with over NT$20 million in domestic ticket sales. Several more supernatural horror-fests are now in production.

The Hong Kong film industry has been mining China's rich tradition of the supernatural for many years. Surprisingly, the mainland Chinese industry has done very little with it because supernatural subject matter is officially taboo. In Taiwan, where the local industry is just beginning to explore the horror genre, the biggest challenges these devoted monster-movie makers are facing are: How do you put a modern face on the abundant ghostly resources that our folk tradition provides? And how can Taiwan bring the unique character of its monster films to the international market?
