<< review queue entry 67071 - submitted by 'pzelchenko' >> Combined and in quotes in Google search, 18000 hits; not sure if this qualifies it in your book as a full-fledged 四字成语 -- would help if I understood your criteria for that. See accompanying 虚妄荒谬. ---------------------------------------- Editor: I'd say it doesn't qualify, basically because it's just two words that essentially mean the same thing: 虚妄 and 荒诞. Both mean "preposterous; absurd; ridiculous". As far as I could see, no dictionary has any chengyu starting with 虚妄, although there are, in addition to the two you submitted, various four-character expressions like 虛妄不實 虛妄無據 虛妄無理 etc. There's a page listing some 30 actual chengyu that are all under the heading 虚妄荒诞方面的成语, but 虚妄荒诞 itself is not one of them: http://www.esk365.com/chengyu/tscy131.html If you're thinking that our definition of 虛妄 ("fabricated") doesn't convey that it means "preposterous", that's a reasonable thought. We do need to improve our entry for 虛妄. Here's a 虛妄 example about somebody thinking of becoming a Falun Gong devotee: 即使「成佛」的許諾是虛妄的,最壞的結果也不過是自己「變成了一個好人」,... <<Even if the promise that devotees will become Buddhas is preposterous, the worst thing that can happen is that "you will become a good person.">> |
