Several fashi (masters of the esoteric arts, often called "Taoist priests" in English), wearing Taoist attire, set up an altar with "soul pennants," incense candles, and paper spirit money in front, and 21 "amulets to ward off evil and restore peace of mind" and 12 "memorial tablets for wandering souls" behind, thus creating an otherworldly atmosphere in which to begin the students' close encounter of the third kind with amulets.With the completion of the ceremony, students could begin a series of small weekly classes in which they followed the instructions of a teacher and learned, brush stroke by brush stroke, how to make calligraphic amulets. |
