1) FORMAT
To me, this is similar to 吃豆腐 -- what I'd call an idiomatic verb-object phrase rather than an idiom.
So I think it should be formatted similarly to
吃豆腐 [chi1 dou4 fu5] /to eat tofu/(fig.) to flirt/to tease/

2) FIG. MEANING
"fig. stir the pot" is ambiguous.
It could mean that 敲锣边儿 is a figurative way of referring to using a spoon to agitate the food when you're cooking.
Of course, what is intended is the figurative sense of "stir the pot" (agitate a situation to cause a reaction or trouble.)
I think we should make that clearer.
"fig. stir up trouble" might be good?

3) K says this expression means something quite different: "come to sb's aid (in word or deed), back sb up

4) M says 從旁煽動。
如:「他們兩人在吵架,你不知勸說,還敲鑼邊兒,到底是何居心?」
which seems like "exacerbate a situation from the sidelines"

5) GR says
tenir des propos ironiques; railler; tourner en dérision
which GT translates as
make ironic remarks; mock; make fun of

6) 500P says "meddle with the intent of causing or intensifying an altercation" and "stir the pot".

7) Chinese Wiktionary says (in the translation section)
ударять по краю гонга (обр. в знач. подстрекать, самому держась в стороне)
which GT translates as
"strike the edge of the gong (arr. to incite, keeping to the side)"

8) SIDE OR EDGE?
I think that Russian definition is right -- it's the *edge* of the gong.
A gong has a front and a back (two "sides").
Normally you hit a gong on the front.
敲锣边儿 however means to hit the gong on the edge, where you don't normally hit it.

GR says "battre le bord du gong" and I think "bord" also means "edge".

9) Summary: I suggest we ignore K since everyone else disagrees with K.
So how about
/(fig.) to stir the pot (i.e. cause or exacerbate a dispute)/

And change "side" to "edge".
Diff:
- 敲鑼邊兒 敲锣边儿 [qiao1 luo2 bian1 er5] /lit. to strike the side of the gong (idiom)/fig. to stir the pot/
+ 敲鑼邊兒 敲锣边儿 [qiao1 luo2 bian1 er5] /to strike the edge of the gong/(fig.) to stir the pot (i.e. cause or exacerbate a dispute)/
