We're defining it as an adverbial phrase.
But it's often used as a noun, as in these examples.

有可能重振起昔日的雄風嗎?
Will the glory of the past be relived?

昔日的繁華已隨時間遠逝,
While the prosperity of the boom years has gradually petered out,

確實,和十多年前相比,今天辦報的人最擔心的事情,似乎已經與昔日有些不同。
Newspaper publishers certainly have more things to worry about today than they did ten years back.
Diff:
- 昔日 昔日 [xi1 ri4] /formerly/in olden days/
+ 昔日 昔日 [xi1 ri4] /former days/in the past/
