1) The lit. part:
逆水行舟 is not a boat, it's an activity -- navigating one's boat against the current
See LA (below), where it's defined using 行船 (a v.o.) or see PLC, M, K, GR etc.

2) The fig. part could be expressed better.
"you must work harder" sounds like admonishing a child who is a bit lazy.

3) LA
逆著水流行船。比喻在艱難的處境中前進(常與「不進則退」連用)​。
例 「逆水行舟,奮力向前」、「學如逆水行舟,不進則退」。
Diff:
- 逆水行舟 逆水行舟 [ni4 shui3 xing2 zhou1] /lit. a boat going against the current (idiom); fig. you must work harder/
+ 逆水行舟 逆水行舟 [ni4 shui3 xing2 zhou1] /lit. navigating a boat against the current (idiom)/fig. in a tough environment (one needs to work hard)/
