1) Adding indications of the sort of contexts in which 激烈 is used.

2) 激烈 most commonly applies to competition.
directing is a highly competitive field
[i.e. the competition is intense/fierce]

3) Pain:

4) It can also refer to a course of action.
In that case, you wouldn't use a words like intense, fierce or acute. So I've added "extreme" and "drastic".

Ex:
chose the most extreme course of action

Lin had to threaten to move out with the cat before her parents backed down.

5) /(of an expression of opinion) impassioned/vehement/

Ex.
will be sure to elicit a vehement response

there are some people in Hong Kong who feel very passionately about this issue,
Diff:
- 激烈 激烈 [ji1 lie4] /intense/acute/fierce/
+ 激烈 激烈 [ji1 lie4] /(of competition or fighting) intense/fierce/(of pain) acute/(of an expression of opinion) impassioned/vehement/(of a course of action) drastic/extreme/
