Most dictionaries have this definition under 一字儿, and this form is well attested even in literature (even classical literature -- see MoE quotation) and more formal writing. It may be reasonable to leave 一字 in. The following definitions are under 一字儿:

【Wenlin】
n. in a row; in a line

【Pleco】
in a row; in a line
| 靶场上一字儿站着十名射手。
| Ten marksmen stood in a row on the range.

【MoE】
成一排的行列。
| 《三国演义.第四二回》:「江西南上战船一字儿摆开,乘风唿哨而至。」
