Chinese star anise is not the same as what in the West is called anise but it also has a similar taste. (Anise -- Pimpinella anisum; fennel -- Foeniculum vulgare; Chinese star anise -- Illicium verum) * Lu Xun (himself from Shaoxing) mentions 茴香豆 in his short story 孔乙己. In the three major English translations 茴香豆 was translated as aniseed-peas (the Yangs), fennel beans (Lyell) and aniseed beans (Lovell).
