It's the "crumb" (soft interior) of a loaf of bread, not "breadcrumbs".

crumb
1a : a small fragment especially of something baked (such as bread) [...]
3 : the soft part of bread [...] <--------------------------- [it's THIS sense of "crumb" that's relevant here]
