How can 亂七八糟 be "sixes and sevens" if 七 is seven and 八 is eight? I would even argue it could translate to, "A mess of sevens and eights"

Editor: well, "at sixes and sevens" is an English expression that suits the definition of 乱七八糟, which in Chinese happens to involve numbers seven and eight.
Diff:
# - 亂七八糟 乱七八糟 [luan4 qi1 ba1 zao1] /everything in disorder (idiom); in a hideous mess • at sixes and sevens <CC>/
# + 亂七八糟 乱七八糟 [luan4 qi1 ba1 zao1] /everything in disorder (idiom); in a hideous mess • at sevens and eights <CC>/
