Various species of spiders use silk extruded from spinnerets to build webs, to transfer sperm, to entrap insects by wrapping it around them, to make egg-cases, to catch the wind and fly (ballooning), etc. Some insect larvae (including silkworms) extrude silk to make a protective cocoon for their metamorphosis.

They look as if they are all gathered for a meeting, but each is also busily spinning threads of silk which it attaches to leaves to pull them together into shelters. The fine filaments also allow the caterpillars to travel all over the trees without having to worry about being blown away by the wind or washed off by the rain.

the way spiders spin silk and weave webs is also one of the wonders of nature

it is only when they [silkworms] eat mulberry leaves that they can produce silk

捲葉蛾的幼蟲(以下簡稱捲葉蟲),為了躲避天敵,會吐絲捲起葉片,像個兩端開口的長筒子;
To avoid its natural enemies, a leaf roller moth larva will roll a leaf up in the silk it spins, forming a tube open on both ends; the leaf provides both shelter and food for the larva.

Everyone gathers round for a closer look at the [spiny weaver ants] nest, which is woven out of larval silk, and catches sight of another nest beneath the tree's trunk.
