It also follows from 木版 and 版画 this should be what it means. Much of the Japanese high culture and creative wealth that we know today, from wood-block prints to kabuki theatre, blossomed during this era of seclusion. Martin Luther's pamphlets about church corruption used woodcuts showing the Pope handing out favours to the nobility while scorning the poor. I'd be happy to show you my collection of woodblock prints any time. ======================================= Editor: Thanks. My comments: 1) 木版 木版 [mu4 ban3] /(printing) woodblock/ Yes, that's a big improvement! ---------- 2) + 版畫 版画 [ban3 hua4] /print produced by relief printing (such as woodcut, metalcut, wood engraving, etc.)/ 版畫 can refer to *printmaking* as well as the print that is produced Examples: - 閒暇時開始跟著老師學西畫、版畫、木雕; - 以版畫方式做出一系列的山水畫來。 - 他還讓學生學習版畫, And according to Wikipedia, 版畫 encompasses not only relief printing, but all printmaking techniques, including intaglio, lithography and screen printing. https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%89%88%E7%94%BB Other examples: It was in Japan that he discovered printmaking. Unlike painting by hand, in printmaking a piece of wood (or other material) is used as an intermediary to the creation of the final image. A dazzling array of printing forms and techniques were in common practice in the Japanese world: besides the relief printing that was common in Taiwan at that time, there were also intaglio prints using copper, zinc, or gold plates, lithographs, and screen printing (serigraphy). Feeling the endless possibilities in printmaking enhanced by modern technology, Liao began studying intaglio printing and lithography. He took an assistantship at the Pratt Graphics Center in exchange for free access to the studios and printmaking equipment. At Pratt, he was able to study silkscreening while networking within the printmaking community and adding to his repertoire of printmaking techniques. Liao explains that each print medium produces a different feeling or effect. The lines in a wooden print have a charming simplicity to them, the contrast between light and dark is pronounced, and the print's texture is full of interesting variations arising from the natural grain of the wood; copper plates produce crisp, assertive lines with only subtle contrasts in coloration; lithography allows the artist greater control of the heaviness of the lines as well as evincing a natural "inkiness"; silk screening affords neat, evenly distributed layers of bright color, as in the work of pop artist Andy Warhol, a famous practitioner of the technique. ---------- 3) 木版畫 木版画 [mu4 ban3 hua4] /woodblock print/ You write "Chinese dictionaries describe the process of producing woodblock print". That's correct: it's a process, and a print is not a process. Your 2nd and 3rd examples support the "print" gloss, but in the first one, I'd say it's the art form (printing technique), just as the other item it's linked with (kabuki) is also an art form. "woodcut" and "wood engraving" both refer to either the technique or a print made with that technique, and that seems to be true of 木版畫 as well -- just as 版畫 can refer to either printmaking or a print. "woodblock printing" seems to be a technique that often involves the printing of *text*. See the Wp article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodblock_printing So I don't think that's so appropriate for 木版畫, which I think is primarily a technique for making pictures rather than text. |
